The evolution of GTA's most iconic city across three games, two universes, and a decade of gaming history.
Liberty City has appeared in more GTA games than any other location, evolving dramatically with each generation.
3D Universe (2001)
GTA III's Liberty City was groundbreaking but compact. Three islands - Portland, Staunton Island, and Shoreside Vale - connected by bridges. The city was dark, grimy, and perpetually overcast. It set the template for every open-world city that followed.
3D Universe Prequel (1998)
Liberty City Stories revisits the city three years before GTA III. Toni Cipriani helps Salvatore Leone consolidate power, and players see a version of the city before the gang wars that Claude would navigate.
HD Universe (2008)
GTA IV completely rebuilt Liberty City as a close analogue of New York. Four boroughs plus Alderney replaced the three islands, with exponentially more detail, Euphoria physics, and a living population of thousands. It's widely considered one of the most atmospheric game worlds ever created.
The Constant
Despite the changes, Liberty City maintains its identity: a dense urban jungle where immigrants chase the American Dream, crime families battle for control, and opportunity and danger exist on every corner. It's the city that built GTA.
